The Godfather – Part II
The betrayal of Fredo Corleone, the second son of Vito and Carmela.
Very frail since childhood, he somehow survived pneumonia and grew up aggressive and physically strong.
As an adult, he was considered by everyone to be the weakest of the three brothers and ill-suited to participate in the family business.
His main task was to escort important family friends around the city.
By pure chance, he found himself driving his father Vito during the assassination attempt that nearly cost him his life, demonstrating, even in that circumstance, his total ineptitude.
A hopeless womanizer, he was a great embarrassment for the organization during his time in Las Vegas, where he had to be treated for syphilis and arrange several abortions for singers and dancers due to his sexual conduct.
When Michael succeeded Vito, Fredo was named underboss but in reality never had the power that role was supposed to guarantee.
He married a movie star and got his own television show, as well as his wife’s betrayal.
Growing increasingly discontent compared to his younger brother, he revealed to gangster Johnny Ola, the bodyguard of the powerful Hyman Roth, the financial affairs of his family and Michael’s movements.
This information was used to orchestrate an ambush against his brother and later to bring in the Senate inquiry commission.
Michael discovered Fredo’s involvement/betrayal and eventually banished him from the family forever.
Epilogue
“Fredo, you are nothing to me anymore.
You are neither my brother nor my friend; I don’t want to know anything about you or what you do. I don’t want you in our hotels, and even less in my home. If you visit mom, let me know a day in advance so I can leave.

After the death of their mother Carmela, Fredo was executed with a gunshot to the back of the neck by Al Neri during a boat trip on the lake, under direct orders from Michael himself.
“When they tried to kill me, it was you who betrayed me
And you broke my heart!”
