Welcome back to the weekly video game column! Today we present Alan Wake: an action-adventure game, developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Microsoft Studios, released on May 14, 2010, for Xbox 360 and February 16, 2012, for Microsoft Windows.

Plot

Alan Wake, a successful writer suffering from the classic “writer’s block,” goes with his beloved wife Alice to the quiet town of Bright Falls. In a cottage surrounded by forests, lakes, and mountains, he hopes to regain his lost inspiration. But all will be thwarted by the nature of this place, which will soon reveal itself to be cursed, filled with dark forces and terrible secrets kept by the local inhabitants. And as if all this weren’t enough, Alan will almost immediately witness the mysterious disappearance of his wife, seemingly swallowed by the waters of Cauldron Lake.

Gameplay

The game unfolds over six chapters, gradually and relentlessly plunging us into a kind of hallucinatory reality, teetering between the protagonist’s dreams and the uninviting external world. It’s a true descent into madness that leaves no escape, in search of the beloved Alice.

Trivia

Ilkka Villi is the Finnish actor and writer on whom the protagonist is modeled. You may have seen him in the Netflix series “Bordertown.”
Alan Wake Remastered, released in October 2021 on Windows, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, contains the complete game and the special episodes “The Signal” and “The Writer.”
