Dante's Inferno

Dante’s Inferno

Dante’s Inferno
“In the middle of the journey of our life, I found myself in a dark wood, for the straight way had been lost.”

I bet these few words brought back many memories…

All of us, during school, in our Italian literature class, had to deal with the Supreme Poet Dante Alighieri. Probably the most “unlucky” ones were forced by their Italian teacher to memorize some complicated and iconic tercets from Dante’s works.

I’m addressing all those students who felt demoralized and bored by the mechanical reading of the most famous work of the Florentine poet: The Divine Comedy.

What if I told you that there’s a horror video game, a dynamic “hack and slash” adventure, starring a bloody, dark, and tormented Dante Alighieri?
Did I grab your attention with the image of a Dark White Guelph?

Plot

Dante is a veteran of the Third Crusade, who wants to save the soul of his beloved Beatrice from the diabolical Lucifer; to do so, he must traverse all of Hell, facing his past, his crimes, and his very own sins.
In this terrifying and frightening journey, he is aided by Virgil, an incorporeal spirit guide, useless in battles against infernal abominations but capable of offering a bit of solace, making the protagonist feel less alone.

Gameplay

Throughout the game, you can choose to wield: the Halberd, the powerful Death Scythe, also wielded by other devils, and the Holy Cross given to Dante by Beatrice.
The game also offers multiple spells freely inspired by the Comedy, such as, to name a few, the Path of Redemption (the first spell to appear in the game), Divine Grace (the most powerful spell), and the Black Aura of Lust.

During your infernal journey, you can also find numerous special items, called Relics, which help the player in combat or to level up.

“Hell awaits you”!

Destruction

Dante’s Inferno was published by EA Redwood Shores (Visceral Games), which closed in 2017, on February 5, 2010, for Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and on February 26 for Playstation Portable.
What do you think?

How many of you have faced the poor souls of the Inferno with Dante’s Death Scythe?

Would you have ever imagined such a journey for the Supreme Poet during your school years?

Let us know what you think.

Quote from Beatrice

“I fear my friend has lost his way. Help him, Virgil, so that he may come to me. I am Beatrice, and when I stand before my Lord, I will sing your praises.”
