PLOT
Detective Sebastian Castellanos, along with colleagues Julie Kidman and Joseph Oda, goes to Beacon Mental Hospital after being assigned to investigate a violent mass murder incident. Upon arriving at the crime scene, the three are met with a shocking sight: dozens of lifeless bodies greet the police in the lobby of the psychiatric hospital. Things will take an unexpected turn after an encounter with a mysterious hooded man…
CONSIDERATIONS
The Evil Within successfully modernizes a dated concept with brilliant and innovative ideas. The game manages to blend two worlds: the survival-horror of Resident Evil and the psychological horror of Silent Hill. We are therefore presented with a well-constructed work, where combat phases are indeed central but never overshadow the progression of an excellently written plot. The gameplay pace is generally high, with sudden narrative twists that are truly noteworthy, leading the player to experience a rich and surprising journey. In terms of gameplay, we encounter something very similar to what was seen in Resident Evil 4, with the addition of a stealth component that broadens the possibilities for approaching various situations. However, the standout feature of the work is the sudden transitions between different environments, allowing Sebastian to seamlessly shift from realistic places to dreamlike dimensions, making everything unpredictable and disorienting.
IN CONCLUSION
The Evil Within is undoubtedly one of the most successful horror video games of all time. Shinji Mikami confirms that he is one of the brightest minds in the video game industry, delivering an authorial work that is also capable of reaching a broad audience. Visionary and terrifying, it unites tradition and innovation.
