Robert Berdella – The Collector, known as The Kansas City Butcher, was an American serial killer and torturer active in the 1980s. Born on January 31, 1949, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Berdella had a troubled childhood. After dropping out of college, he moved to Kansas City, where he became a well-known figure in the local arts and gay community. Modus Operandi
Berdella lured his victims, often vulnerable young men, many of whom lived on the fringes of society, such as drug addicts or prostitutes. He drugged, imprisoned, and tortured them in his home. He used drugs and torture devices to inflict pain, often for days or weeks before killing them.
He kept a detailed diary of the tortures inflicted on his victims, describing methods that included injecting liquids into their eyes and electroshock on their genitals. The bodies of the victims were photographed, dismembered, and the remains were often disposed of in household waste.

Description: Jerry Howell was a friend of Berdella. Berdella drugged and tortured him for about 28 hours before he died of asphyxiation. After death, Berdella dismembered the body and disposed of the remains in the trash.
2. Robert Sheldon
Age: 20 years
Date of Death: April 12, 1985
Description: Robert Sheldon was drugged, tortured, and held captive for three days. Berdella disposed of the body similarly to the previous victim, dismembering it and throwing the remains in the garbage.
3. Mark Wallace
Age: 27 years
Date of Death: June 7, 1985
Description: Wallace was a homeless person whom Berdella had met. He was tortured and killed within a few hours, suffocated during one of Berdella’s sadistic experiments.
4. James Ferris
Age: 25 years
Date of Death: September 27, 1985
Description: Ferris was tortured for about 27 hours. Berdella meticulously noted the various tortures inflicted, including electric shocks and drug injections. He died from asphyxiation or trauma.
5. Todd Stoops

6. Larry Wayne Pearson

Christopher Bryson (Survivor)
Age: 22 years
Description: Bryson was the last victim captured by Berdella but managed to escape after four days of captivity and torture, ultimately leading to Berdella’s arrest on April 2, 1988.

Arrest of Robert Berdella
Berdella was arrested on April 2, 1988, when one of his victims, Christopher Bryson, managed to escape from the house where he had been held captive for over four days. Naked and wearing only a dog collar, Bryson was able to seek help from a neighbor. The police raided Berdella’s home, where they found shocking evidence of his crimes, including photographs of the victims and the diary documenting the tortures.
Robert Berdella pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty and was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole in 1988. He died in prison on October 9, 1992, from a heart attack at the age of 43.
