Alan Wake 2 is a third-person survival horror game developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Epic Games.
Released in 2023, thirteen years after its magnificent predecessor, Alan Wake 2 has showcased its technical brilliance on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This work is part of the so-called Remedy Connected Universe, the narrative universe that links all of Remedy’s titles in recent years.
Upon release, the game received much critical acclaim and was nominated for Game of the Year 2023.
PLOT
Following the events of the first game, Alan remains trapped in a dark dimension where his words have the power to alter events in the real world. The writer desperately seeks to escape from this prison of nightmares. Meanwhile, on the other side, Detective Saga Anderson is assigned to investigate some mysterious occurrences that appear to be linked to the missing writer. Soon, their paths will cross…
THOUGHTS
Defining *Alan Wake 2* as merely a “video game” feels reductive. The title is a complex gaming experience meticulously crafted in every detail. *Alan Wake 2* achieves the feat of being a cinematic piece while retaining the core features a game must have to stay engaging and never simplistic in its mechanics.
The main innovation from the first installment is the use of two characters, each advancing well-defined yet interconnected parallel storylines. The writing for the two protagonists and all the other major and minor characters in the story is of the highest quality. This installment is often discussed mainly for its extraordinary visual impact, but in our view, the real gem lies in its writing and plot progression. Never before has there been such a profound and complex piece of work. Certainly, visually we are close to photorealism, and Remedy’s work in this regard is nothing short of miraculous, but this aspect of the game enhances the player’s full immersion in the events of Bright Falls and beyond.
IN CONCLUSION
At times frightening, at times moving, at times funny, at times completely insane… *Alan Wake 2* represents the new benchmark for horror in video games. After years of waiting, the development team led by Sam Lake has delivered a work of a quality probably not seen since *Silent Hill 2*.
Highly recommended, though it requires patience. Only then can one fully appreciate its magnificent complexity. Exceptional in every respect.
