Bad Taste

Bad Taste (Out of Their Minds)
Director: Peter Jackson
New Zealand, 1987

PLOT

A group of alien hunters lands on Earth and wipes out an entire neighborhood with the aim of butchering the bodies to use the meat in a fast food chain. A special unit is dispatched to the scene to try and stop them by any means possible.

CONSIDERATIONS

*Bad Taste*, translated into Italian with the questionable title *Fuori di Testa* (*Out of Their Minds*), is a B-movie gore horror that has the huge merit of introducing Peter Jackson to the world of cinema. Ramshackle and completely unhinged, it pays the price for its low budget in terms of professional acting and special effects, but it already hints at the great potential of the New Zealand director, who would later unleash all his horror genius in the wonderful [*Braindead*](https://horrordelite.art/splatters-gli-schizzacervelli/) (*Splatters – gli schizzacervelli*).
A disgusting heap of gags and grotesque, often absurd situations, conceived, directed, and acted by Jackson with the help of friends. The film is a frenzy of delirious scenarios overflowing with splatter and gore moments where you see sheep (a symbol of New Zealand) blown up by bazookas, copious meals of alien vomit, skulls tied together with a belt, and machine guns shoved into stomachs… all of it supported by the ever-present underlying irony, a hallmark of Jackson’s style.

An essential cult classic, Bad Taste served as a springboard for Jackson towards a golden career, while also becoming a pillar of the extreme horror genre, which still considers it one of the most significant and influential titles. You can find and watch it for free on YouTube.

PANDEMONIC MOMENT

When Derek faces the alien leader, splits his skull open with a chainsaw, cutting through until it exits from his “rear,” all while screaming with a grin, the iconic line: “I’VE BEEN BORN AGAIN!”
