When we talk about extreme splatter horror… we talk about Braindead
Plot
A group of archaeologists is on Skull Island searching for a rare Sumatra Monkey.
Once found and captured, the animal is brought to Wellington, where it is locked up in a zoo.
One afternoon, Lionel and Paquita, who are strolling around the zoo, are secretly followed by his mother, who disapproves of their relationship. She accidentally gets bitten by the monkey.
What seemed like a simple bite wound leads to terrible consequences.
Peter Jackson
Peter Jackson was this: an anarchic, brilliant, and crazy director, capable of bringing visionary and grotesque details to the screen.
This was before King Kong, before Hollywood, and most notably before the cinematic mythology he would gain with The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
His Braindead (translated in Italy as Splatters – Gli Schizzacervelli), following the sickening Bad Taste, rightfully entered the pantheon of the most important extreme films and one of the best horror movies of the 90s.
Even after 30 years, it still doesn’t go unnoticed thanks to its blend of humor, grotesque situations, and extreme splatter horror.
Besides the delirious moments, what stands out is the director’s great narrative ability.
The screenplay is lively and filled with completely out-of-control moments, made even more extreme by the beautiful and realistic special effects.
Watching this film, it’s easy to understand why Jackson’s Weta Unity, which would be founded two years later, became a benchmark for all special effects companies to compare themselves with. This film also marked Jackson’s leap to Hollywood, where he would be consecrated as a world-renowned director.
Pandemonic Moment
The legendary zombie massacre in the house, where the protagonist uses a lawnmower to create a scene that has gone down in history, using about 300 liters of fake blood.
