Dario Argento and His Unproduced Projects

Dario Argento needs no introduction, having created, especially in the early part of his career, works that remain immortal.

However, some of his projects never saw the light of day for various reasons; here are a few:

“Danza Macabra”
In the 1990s, Argento planned an adaptation of Danza Macabra, a famous horror story by Théophile Gautier. Despite the interest, the project was abandoned due to production complications.

“La Porta sul Buio 2”
After the success of the anthology television series La Porta sul Buio (1973), Argento considered a sequel to bring back the style of short gialli on TV. However, the project never materialized.

Another unproduced TV project, conceived as a miniseries in the 1980s. Argento was set to direct some episodes, but the project was canceled due to lack of funding.

“Il Cavaliere del Miele”
Argento worked on a screenplay about a mythological figure, “Il Cavaliere del Miele” (The Knight of Honey), a being emerging from a dark and fantastical world. Despite the original idea, the film was never produced.

“Gli Occhi della Notte” (Remake)
In the 1980s, Argento considered a remake of Gli Occhi della Notte (1967) by Terence Young, a psychological thriller starring Audrey Hepburn. The project was discussed but never realized.

“Il Sosia”
In the early 2000s, Argento had in mind a film inspired by Dostoevsky’s novel The Double, a disturbing tale of identity and inner conflict. However, the project remained only on paper.
