Horror Films Based on True Stories
Do you find that knowing a horror film is inspired by real events increases the unease?
Here are some examples:
The Exorcist (1973) – Inspired by the exorcism case of Roland Doe (a pseudonym) that took place in 1949.
The Amityville Horror (1979) – Based on the events of the haunted house in Amityville, New York, where the Lutz family claimed to have experienced paranormal occurrences.
The Conjuring (2013) – Based on the experiences of demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren in the Harrisville house, Rhode Island.
Annabelle (2014) – Inspired by the real Annabelle doll, kept in the Warrens’ occult museum.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) – Partially inspired by the crimes of the serial killer Ed Gein.
Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) – Inspired by real cases of people dying in their sleep due to intense nightmares, known as Sudden Unexpected Death Syndrome.
The Haunting in Connecticut (2009) – Based on the paranormal experiences of the Snedeker family in their Connecticut home.
Wolf Creek (2005) – Inspired by the murders of budget travelers in Australia, including those committed by Ivan Milat.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) – Based on the real exorcism of Anneliese Michel, a young German woman who died in 1976.
Veronica (2017) – Inspired by the case of Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro, a Spanish girl who died under mysterious circumstances after playing with a Ouija board.
These films draw inspiration from real events, although filmmakers often take creative liberties to heighten the horror element and thus cinematic entertainment.
