The lawsuit, initiated on April 11, was filed by Johnny Depp against his ex-wife seeking $50 million in damages, claiming he was defamed when the woman referred to herself in the press as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” The woman testified in court that she suffered physical and sexual assaults from Depp on several occasions. She also stated that she was defamed when Depp’s lawyer called her abuse allegations a hoax.
Johnny Depp will not be present as he is still in Great Britain, where he performed with Jeff Beck at the Royal Albert Hall in London yesterday.
The marriage between the two actors lasted only 15 months, from 2015 to 2017. Their relationship has been retraced with all its (many, too many) horrifying backstories.
It was the ex-husband who sued the Aquaman star for defamation. But, beyond the amount requested by the former Pirates of the Caribbean star, what the actor seeks is rehabilitation in Hollywood, from which he has been excluded. In contrast, Heard is asking for $100 million, claiming that her ex-husband’s allegations have ruined her career as well.
Their union has been described as one of the shortest among stars. In May 2016, Heard indeed filed for divorce. During this period, there were also discussions about the possibility that Depp was violent, as Heard appeared in court with a bruise and stated that her husband caused it by throwing a phone at her. As requested by the woman, a restraining order was issued against the actor to keep him at a distance.
The Verdict
Amber Heard loses on all fronts…
$10 million for direct damages
$5 million as additional punitive damages
