The Resident Evil 2 remake was released in 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Developed and produced by Capcom, the game hit the market with the aim of offering a modern version of the original work released back in 1998. Resident Evil 2 Remake was extremely well received by both the public and critics and set a benchmark for remakes of classic games.
PLOT
Resident Evil 2 Remake roughly presents the same story as the classic title that was released on the original PlayStation. The protagonists are two: Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Leon is a new recruit in the Raccoon City Police Department, while Claire is a student searching for her brother Chris (the protagonist of the series’ first chapter). They accidentally meet at a gas station, where they are attacked by zombies. Still unaware of what is happening in Raccoon City, they head towards the city, but due to an accident, they are forced to part ways. The uniqueness of Resident Evil 2 lies in the ability to choose which scenario to play. In both cases, we are tasked with finding a way to escape the city, but the two narrative paths are largely different. Nonetheless, both Leon’s and Claire’s scenarios have their true starting point within the police station.
CONSIDERATIONS
This 2019 version of Resident Evil 2 shows the world how a remake should be done. It manages to preserve the atmosphere of the original title while making it appealing to a new audience by incorporating modern gameplay and a high-quality technical/artistic design.
The game offers a challenging level of difficulty, just like its namesake. We must be careful not to waste a single bullet and to thoroughly explore the game environment to find any items useful for our survival. Another commendable aspect is the puzzles, which are varied and never trivial, requiring a certain amount of effort without ever becoming frustrating. Resident Evil 2 Remake is a long-lasting game, especially thanks to the possibility of playing through two distinct scenarios, keeping us glued to the screen for around twenty hours.
IN CONCLUSION
Resident Evil 2 Remake is that classic video game that raises the quality bar. Since its release, every developer with the idea of modernizing a great classic will have to contend with Capcom’s work, which will undoubtedly push them to give their all.
Recommended for both old-school gamers and new generations.
