Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a survival-horror game that was released in 2017 on Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
The game was developed internally by the production company Capcom. This latest chapter marks a new beginning for the Resident Evil saga, as it distances itself from previous episodes by introducing a first-person perspective and a game world that is decidedly closer to the cinematic works of Tobe Hooper than to those of George A. Romero, which were a clear source of inspiration in the past. It is also worth noting that Resident Evil 7: Biohazard can be played in VR and that as of July 2, 2024, the title will also be available on smartphones and iPhones.
PLOT
Ethan Winters arrives in Louisiana in search of his missing wife. She managed to contact him some time earlier via email, asking for help and providing an address where he would find her. Upon reaching the location, our protagonist finds himself near a classic rural estate in the middle of nowhere. Once inside, Ethan soon reunites with Mia, but unfortunately, he must meet the homeowners: the Baker family…
CONSIDERATIONS
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a work that, fortunately for us, presents itself very differently compared to the fifth and sixth installments of the series. The purely action component takes a back seat to create an atmosphere rich in tension, much beloved by fans of the very early chapters. The first-person perspective is a bold yet absolutely successful choice, as it is functional for experiencing a “pleasantly” immersive gameplay experience. The first hours of gameplay are undoubtedly among the best in Capcom’s horror production, thanks especially to the claustrophobic setting (which is very similar to cinematic works like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre) and a few well-timed jump scares. As the game progresses toward the final phases of the adventure, the title loses some of its brilliance but still maintains good levels of quality. In terms of gameplay, we certainly don’t face anything innovative, but the good balance of the game ensures that everything works well.
Graphically and sonically, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a truly remarkable title that we recommend playing with headphones and, if possible, with a virtual reality headset.
IN CONCLUSION
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, in my opinion, is one of the best horror titles of recent years and a splendid new starting point for a saga that was dangerously heading toward decline. A courageous work, rightly rewarded by critics and audiences alike. Wonderfully anxiety-inducing.
