The Pennhurst Asylum
A terrible place when it was operational and still capable of generating fear in the few people who have had the courage to visit it after its closure.
Founded with the intention of housing, rehabilitating, and providing refuge for disabled and mentally ill individuals.
Inaugurated in 1908, this large hospital complex located in Spring City, Pennsylvania, soon transformed from a place of rehabilitation for patients into one of the hospitals with the worst reputation in the United States.
A psychiatric prison where all individuals deemed abnormal were locked up and made to live in terrible conditions, it was subject to severe overcrowding that led to its inevitable decline.
Physical and psychological abuse were daily occurrences, as well as the use of electroshock therapy. Patients considered dangerous and prone to biting had all their teeth removed, and they faced isolation, beatings, a degrading life, and conditions at the limit of endurance.
In 1987, the complex closed its doors permanently, and clearly, such a dark history could only generate numerous beliefs and legends of all kinds.
It is said to currently be haunted by numerous restless spirits.
One particular room seems to be the most haunted: the punishment room, where patients were segregated for days without food or sunlight. People who enter the room today often suffer from malaise, claustrophobia, and a sensation of lack of oxygen. Many even claim to have felt icy drafts right at that spot in the complex.
There are also stories of people claiming that cameras or cell phones inside the institution stop working or malfunction.
In the area where children were kept, crying is often heard or small dolls and toys appear in places where they were not previously present. According to popular belief, Pennhurst is a center of very strong paranormal activity.
