Buon Compleanno Mr. Grape

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape

Given that I would have awarded Leonardo DiCaprio the Oscar for his performance in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, I find that the entire cast is absolutely perfect…

The plot revolves around Gilbert Grape, a young man who bears the weight of a dysfunctional family, made even more challenging by the death of his father.

On one side, there is a mother who is severely overweight and can no longer move or leave the house; on the other side is young Arnie, who has a mental disorder and simultaneously idolizes his older brother.

CURIOUS FACTS

Johnny Depp stated that he felt uncomfortable ridiculing the character of Momma, played by Darlene Cates. His discomfort was such that after each take, the actor felt the need to apologize, telling her he hated having to say those certain things.
Despite Johnny Depp’s not-so-positive recollection, Leonardo DiCaprio had an almost opposite view. According to the actor who became famous for Titanic, filming What’s Eating Gilbert Grape was one of the most enjoyable experiences of his life.

Johnny Depp admitted that during the film’s production, he was easily irritated by Leonardo DiCaprio.

Johnny Depp also mentioned that he had great respect for DiCaprio, who worked hard on What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and had done a mountain of research.
