Doctor Who (1963/1990 – 2005/present)

Welcome back to our Friday night series column, where each week we bring you a new TV show, ranging from horror to sci-fi without forgetting drama! Tonight, we’re talking about Doctor Who, a British science fiction series that debuted in 1963 and has gained a massive fan following worldwide.

The series centers around the character of the Doctor, an alien time traveler who explores the universe with a blend of intelligence, humor, and the ability to improvise in difficult situations. The Doctor can regenerate into a new body when gravely injured, allowing the character to remain the main protagonist for over fifty years.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Doctor Who is the concept of time travel, which allows viewers to visit different historical eras and witness events unfold. Additionally, the series often tackles complex themes such as philosophy, morality, and ethics, making it appealing to adults as well.

Regarding the various actors who have portrayed the Doctor over the years, the first was William Hartnell from 1963 to 1966. Subsequently, many different actors have taken on the role, leading up to the more recent portrayals by Matt Smith (2010-2013) and Jodie Whittaker, who became the first woman to play the lead character in the show’s history.

Besides the main characters, the series has featured a wide range of actors playing the Doctor’s companions. Some of the most famous companions include Elisabeth Sladen, Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman, and Karen Gillan.

Despite various interruptions and changes in lead actors, the series has always managed to reinvent itself and capture the audience’s imagination, even transitioning from black and white to color and utilizing increasingly sophisticated special effects.

It’s no wonder that the series is as popular today as it was when it first aired over fifty years ago. Currently, it boasts a total of 38 seasons (26 seasons of the classic series and 12 seasons of the new series), along with numerous special episodes, spin-offs, and other projects related to the Doctor Who universe.
