Born in Newark on December 18, 1954, Ray was adopted at six months by the Vidimarli-Liotta family. Raised in a large family, he was introduced to cinema by his actor friend Steven Bauer, who was married to Melanie Griffith at the time and brought him to the set of Something Wild, which as a debutant earned him a Golden Globe nomination. After a series of small roles, his career was changed by the film that made him famous: Scorsese entrusted him with the role of the Irish-Italian Henry, who seeks his place in the American mafia alongside Robert De Niro, Paul Sorvino, and Joe Pesci, who would go on to win an Oscar nomination.

In the ’90s, Ray starred in a series of films that highlighted both his talent and his distinctive look. During that time, he continued working with directors like Guy Ritchie (Revolver), Ridley Scott (Hannibal), and Ted Demme (Blow).
