Aphex Twin – Come To Daddy
When Aphex Twin brought horror into music video art.
*Come to Daddy*, certainly the most famous and aggressive single by Aphex Twin, was released in 1997, accompanied by a memorable video that traumatized a generation. Of course, it’s mild compared to the most extreme horror films we know, but significant when you consider that it was a music video; a medium meant to promote the release of a single also through a video channel. The video (which you can watch below) was directed by Chris Cunningham, a director known for having also worked with Placebo (*36 Degrees*), Portishead (*Only You*), and Madonna (*Frozen*).
The video for *Come to Daddy* is set in what appears to be the abandoned suburbs of an unidentified English city. In reality, it’s Thamesmead, a London district also known for hosting the filming of Stanley Kubrick’s A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. Additionally, the same locations were used for the series *Misfits* (2009 – 2013). The video opens with an elderly woman walking her dog in the gloomy places we see.
The dog urinates on a discarded television, which suddenly comes to life, revealing the heavily distorted face of Richard D. James, aka Aphex Twin. The terrifying vision repeats: “I want your soul / I will eat your soul,” evoking a demonic scenario.
