Evil Dead
Directed by Fede Álvarez
USA, 2013

A group of friends decides to spend a few days in a remote bay in the woods.

This is an attempt to help Mia, one of the group members, as she progresses through her recovery and detoxification from hard drugs.

During their stay at the cottage, they find a strange book in the basement that, with its contents and illustrations, appears to be connected to some kind of occult ritual.

Unknowingly, reading the formulas will summon a demon that awakens in the woods, creating chaos.

Evil Dead, the official debut of the director in a feature film, is the remake of the 1981 masterpiece of the same name directed by Sam Raimi.

Unlike the original work, there is no trace of irony in this chapter, nor any “heroic figure” reminiscent of the legendary Ash.

Here, the sense of imminent apocalypse reigns supreme.

The visual impact is extremely strong, and the dark evil that constantly manifests itself—knocking down trees and flinging open doors—easily possesses the bodies of the unlucky victims in a remarkably brutal manner.

The famous scenes of running through the woods, the cursed trapdoor, the chainsaw, and some iconic lines remain intact (such as “You will all die tonight” or “What happened to her eyes?”).

All this is accompanied by an abundance of deep cuts, skinning, transforming faces, possessions, amputated limbs, and torrents of blood.

Álvarez delivers a heartfelt tribute to one of the cornerstones of horror history, while also adding his own distinct touch: extreme, pure, and disgusting entertainment filled with rhythm and action, culminating in the grand final duel.

All of this is framed and explained by the sinister pages of the Necronomicon, which accompany the key moments of the film.

Pandemonic Moment

The surreal, yet visually overwhelming, blood rain under which the scenes of the final showdown take place.
