Horror cartoons allow us to savor stop-motion animated films.
Starting with CORALINE and the Magic Door, a stop-motion animated film from 2009 directed by Henry Selick and produced by Laika Entertainment. The film is based on the story Coraline, written by Neil Gaiman.

THE CORPSE BRIDE, an animated film from 2005 directed by Mike Johnson and Tim Burton.

The film is loosely inspired by the 19th-century Jewish-Russian version of an older Jewish folktale, transposed into an imaginary era reminiscent of the Victorian age.

MONSTER HOUSE, an animated film from 2006 directed by Gil Kenan.

TRIVIA ABOUT CORALINE

  • Director Henry Selick appears in a sort of “cameo”: his face is the one that appears on a coin.
  • The name “Coraline” is the result of a typo by Neil Gaiman; the protagonist was supposed to be named Caroline, but the author’s fingers slipped on the keyboard. Gaiman ultimately chose to keep the mistake.
  • Many scenes contain spoilers about what will happen; for example, within a song or through figures drawn on a wall, details that one might overlook on a first viewing.

Animated films can also create suspense and instill fear, and this video is proof of that. Monsters, demonic creatures, and unsettling events are key ingredients for these cartoons that are anything but for children.
