Same and Different

Boston, Massachusetts.

Good and evil are two evanescent concepts that lack clear and defined boundaries in the world inhabited by the two main protagonists of this film.

A sick, wrong world, full of uncertainties, where nothing is as it seems, where Irish cops and gangsters are just two sides of the same coin.

Everything transforms and becomes deception and betrayal for Colin Sullivan and Billy Costigan.

The former is ambitious and opportunistic while the latter is more fragile and violent, but both are spies and thus live in a constantly ambiguous and dangerous situation in an attempt to redeem their past.

The Departed - The Good and the EvilHowever, they will discover that there is no redemption either within the walls of federal offices or in the seedy bars where Costello reigns supreme.

It is just a matter of perspectives, calculations, and risks because everything is damned and irreparably mirrored.

And the title “the departed” suggests it: the only certainty, at the end of everything, remains the loss of one’s identity or life, that is, death. In any case.

Scorsese returns to manipulate his favorite material, the gangster movie, adapting the previous *Infernal Affairs* by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, and finally conquers, with his usual auteur film where all the elements fit perfectly, the much-awaited and deserved Oscar for Best Director.

The Departed - The Good and the EvilDiCaprio confirms his status at the highest levels with his epic portrayal of a character always in tension, fighting and on the run, but this Mark Wahlberg pre-*Ted* is also remarkable in the role of Sergeant Dignam.

And then there’s Jack Nicholson being Jack Nicholson. And that’s enough. For us and for him. A spectacle!
