Scream

Scream is a slasher media franchise created by Wes Craven, consisting of five films and a television series. It is loosely inspired by the murders committed by Danny Rolling in 1990.

Known as the Gainesville Ripper, he confessed to the murder and mutilation of five students in the town of Gainesville, Florida, in August 1990, the sexual assault of some of his victims, a triple homicide in Shreveport in 1989, and the attempted murder of his father in May 1990. The confirmed victims remain five, but he is strongly suspected in the triple homicide.

TRIVIA

The story written by Kevin Williamson is loosely inspired by murders carried out by Danny Rolling, a serial killer who confessed to killing five college students in Florida in 1990.
Drew Barrymore plays Casey Becker, Ghostface’s first victim.

What many don’t know, however, is that Drew was initially cast in a different role: that of Sidney Prescott.

Ghostface’s terrifying phone calls to his victims before killing them have become iconic in the history of Scream and impacted so many people that, reportedly, they even led to an increase in the sales of caller ID devices and landline phones.

Not everyone knows that Scream was not supposed to be called that. The original title was Scary Movie, which seemed perfect for the plot.

As we know, Scary Movie later became the title of the parody film saga.

Director Wes Craven makes a brief cameo in the film as a janitor, wearing a red and green striped sweater, a tribute to Freddy Krueger, the iconic character from A Nightmare on Elm Street, also created by Craven.

Wes Craven had to cut several violent scenes to obtain an “R” rating from the MPAA; otherwise, the film would have been banned for audiences under 17 in the United States. Craven and the production team had to send the film to the commission nine times before receiving approval.
